Extended Schools

An extended school provides access to a wide range services for young people, families and the whole community all year round. These services can take place before or after school, during lunchtimes, and at weekends and holiday times. Every school in England is expected to provide the following by 2010:

  • Childcare (for pre-school children only)
  • Parenting and family support
  • A range of activities including study support, sport and music clubs
  • Swift and easy referral to specialist services such as health and social care
  • Community use of facilities including adult and family learning, and Information technology.

Extended schools do not necessarily have to provide childcare and activities on school premises, they can work in partnership with local organisations to provide these services at other locations.

Please click for further information on the extended schools initiative.
